Heather Norman Smith crafts another novel set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with the release of New Wine Transportation Company, another installment in her Springville Stories Series (Ambassador International, March 30, 2021). She lives in the Piedmont of North Carolina with her husband, their four children, and several pets. Her goal as an author is to use the written word to entertain and encourage while illuminating the redemptive love of God.

Book Summary:
Springfield Christian Church is a community-serving church, nestled in the mountains of North Carolina. When a bar with a suspicious owner opens in town, the parishioners worry the town’s balance will be upset, and their local Mayberry will be no more. Hoping to combat potential negative changes to their community, the church begins a new ministry: New Wine Transportation Company. The church’s goal is simple: reach out to the community by providing a reliable taxi service for the bar’s inebriated customers. But things begin to grow complicated when rumors begin to grow about the pastor and his wife.

FF: What gave you the idea for New Wine Transportation Company?
All but one of the stories that I’ve written so far, have literally popped into my head one day. Of course, I brainstorm and plot (and pray) to get the entire premise, but I can’t pinpoint a specific inspiration for this story.

FF: What do you want Christians to glean from reading New Wine Transportation Company?
I want Christians to be inspired to trust God and follow His direction, even when the world challenges their direction or even if they don’t know where the path might lead. I don’t want people to see this book as a commentary on drinking, because it’s not intended to be a theological statement on that subject.

FF: Who inspired the main character in this book?
Pastor Daniel Whitefield is a minor character in my first novel, Grace & Lavender. His devotion to his congregation and to following the will of God were inspired by my dad, who has been my pastor my entire life.

FF: How does this differ from your other books?
The point of view characters in this book are all men, and while Pastor Daniel’s story is the focus of most chapters, the other six members of New Wine Transportation Company take a chapter each, which is a bit of a literary anomaly.

FF: What plans do you have for the Springville Stories Series?
The plot of my first book had a connection to the Ladies’ Ministry League of Springville Community Christian Church in fictional Springville, North Carolina. New Wine Transportation Company focuses on a project of the men’s ministry of the church. So, the next book will have another mission taken on by the ladies. I’m not sure how many there will be, but I do have plans for the next one. Each book has a new main character, but the characters from the other books make appearances.
