Serpentine is the debut novel from new author Christy Dietz. Christy has been writing since she picked up her first crayon. One of four daughters, she spent her childhood years dreaming of becoming Jo from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her wrestling her two young sons and drinking very large cups of coffee!

In this interview, Christy answers a few questions about her new book, Serpentine.

FF: What lead you to write your book Serpentine?
Seeing the culture wars and struggle beginning in 2016 and society’s drift from both morality, and polarizing attacks on one another.

FF: What are you hoping to achieve through the publication of Serpentine?
To cause people to think about what they hold dear and the morals that guide their lives.

FF: What is it that Serpentine is warning its readers against?
A world with no moral code, humans pitted against one another.

FF: What books influenced you the most?
Everything from Nancy Drew to Shakespeare!

FF: What is the most surprising thing you learned through the process of writing Serpentine?
Publishing is hard work, and editing can often change the book that you originally envisioned. Hopefully for the better!

FF: How long did it take you to write Serpentine and did you ever consider giving up?
I began writing it in 2016 and it was just published in 2021!

FF: Which part of the novel did you find most difficult to write?
The love triangle and developing those characters in a creative, believable way.

FF: Since you’re also a teacher, how did how that role impact your writing?
I got to practice creative writing alongside my students in class, and sometime even receive feedback from them. As a teacher, I’m always learning.

FF: What are your plans for future writing/books?
I’m working on a children’s book and beginning a mystery-based novel.
