FF: How did living on a farm impact this book?
I live in Tennessee on a cattle and row crop farm with my husband and my four children. Every day I get a front row seat to the splendor of God’s creation. I love the seasonality of the planting of crops, the growing of crops, and the final harvest. It still takes my breath away that we put tiny seeds into the ground in the month of June and by October we have a field of vibrant pumpkins. It seems a bit magical—but living on a farm shows me that God is in every single detail of the process. I want to share the truths I witness on our farm with readers.
FF: Why is it important to help kids connect faith and science?
From a young age, children should learn that God’s purpose and order have been with us since the beginning of time. Too many books leave God out of science, but God is the very source of it all. Wake Up, Little Seed is a celebration of how God makes plants grow. This interactive, step-by-step board book helps children learn “how” plants grow and also celebrates “who” is behind the process.
FF: What do you hope kids learn about God as a Creator from this book?
I hope kids learn that God is the Creator of all the natural world. In today’s time, it’s easy to feel separated from all the food we purchase in the grocery store. I want children to realize they can say, “Thank you, God” for the food on their plates because they realize He is the one who is responsible for the creation of all our food and He sustains our every need.
FF: What is your favorite plant?
I have a strong affection for watermelons! Not only do I adore the fresh, juicy goodness and the season of summer, but this plant is meaningful because we collect seeds from our watermelons, store the seeds, and then plant them the following spring. It’s a beautiful representation of how God sustains our life. We still are able to grow watermelons that my grandmother once grew because of our seed saving.
FF: How has your PhD in education informed the content of this book?
My heart is to write quality books that will encourage parents and children to cuddle up and read! As a scholar I know the importance of daily read-alouds. From the nurturing side of connecting with your child to the academic side of building a foundation of literacy, reading aloud is one of the single most important things a family can do with a child. Recent NAEP data showed that 69 percent of US fourth graders read below grade level. We must change this trend, and sweet, interactive books like Wake Up, Little Seed can help engage little ones with the written word. My PhD helped me know how to craft a book that turns a complex process into simple, child-friendly terms. I pray this is one of the books kids want to read again and again!
FF: What is the primary lesson you want kids to learn from this book?
I hope children learn that the process of growth is an exciting and detailed plan by God: the master of all creation. We might plant and water, but it is ultimately God who we celebrate for providing growth! I also hope it encourages children to go outside and investigate the world around them—perhaps even plant a few seeds and watch the plants grow.
