These Empty Places | What Dreams Are Worth Chasing?
These Empty Places by Sarah Loudin Thomas is a wonderfully thoughtful book that explores the uncertainties and heavy decisions of life.
Main Themes
The two main characters in These Empty Places are Claire and Lena, who both have big dreams for a life of adventure. When life pulls them in a different direction and dreams start to crumble, both women have to decide if it’s worth it to keep fighting for what they once loved most or if it’s time to let those dreams fade into the past.
Claire drops some golden one-liners when giving Lena marriage advice. Her support and encouragement is a great example of what it can look like to mentor women. There are also themes of the dangers of greed, avoiding hard work, and being impatient.
Faith Elements
Christian themes are presented subtly, but that doesn’t diminish their emphasis. Throughout the book, Claire’s consistent compassion towards Lena and her husband was a model of God’s unconditional love towards us. Claire also gives Lena solid, biblical advice on marriage and life.
Family Friendly Considerations
These Empty Places is a very clean book, although some of the obstacles the women run up against probably won’t appeal to teens or younger readers as much as it will to adults.
