The Spy Keeper of Marseille by Roseanna M. White is a heart-pounding historical novel that celebrates a true story from the middle of occupied France during WWII.
Main Themes
Main character Zelie Bellarose is based off of Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, who lead the French intelligence system known as Alliance. Fourcade led 3,000 spies and agents for five years, with no one suspecting that a woman was the mastermind behind Alliance. In The Spy Keeper of Marseille, White has plenty of source material to craft a delightful fictional spin off of the real-world heroine. From squeezing through prison bars to naming her agents after animals, Fourcade’s courage and ingenuity shine through Zelie’s every action.
Main themes include courage in the face of great danger, personal sacrifice for a noble cause, and the unquestionable capability of great female leadership. After her boss is killed, Zelie takes command of Alliance, but she is worried no one will respect her leadership because she’s a woman. But she knows she is the best person for the job, so she pushes ahead. It’s a lonely job, especially when betrayal causes her to realize she has to compartmentalize information even further so no one knows too much. The isolation is wearing her down.
Marcel admires Zelie’s courage and capabilities and is eager to help Alliance in anyway he can. He doesn’t anticipate that requiring him to become personally involved in protecting Zelie’s family or falling in love with Zelie herself. But as Zelie makes sure she is watching the backs of all the other agents, she needs someone to protect her, too. No matter what the cost, Marcel is determined to make sure the Germans never catch the real leader of Alliance.
Faith Elements
Zelie prefers to deal with facts she can see. She doesn’t think she can afford the emotional vulnerability of love or religion, at least not while she has such a massive network of spies to oversee. But as the war stretches through the years, her own strength can only get her so far. There are not many things or people she can trust wholeheartedly, but she slowly starts to learn that God is one of them.
Family Friendly Considerations
This is a very clean novel, especially for being written about WWII. The romance is light and brief kisses-only. There is some violence, as one would expect from a spy novel, but it is not graphic or gory.
