The Ladies Hall by Vanessa Miller is based on the true story of the first trio of African American women who graduated from Oberlin College’s four year program in the 1880s.
Main Themes
The Ladies Hall follows the lives of Mary Church, Anna Julia Cooper, and Ida Gibbs Hunt as they become the first African American women to graduate from Oberlin College twenty years after the Civil War ended. The story showcases their courage and determination to attend the hardest program at Oberlin, while also navigating a country still recovering from the devasting war. The fight for equality and equal rights is in full swing, with this being shown through bullying the women experience at college, the lynching of a family friend, and riots on college trips. The novel emphasized the resiliency of these women as they went on to lead civil rights movements and hold prestigious faculty positions.
Faith Elements
Faith elements are subtle in The Ladies Hall. The characters attend church, although faith varies between being a personal relationship with God and a cultural expression.
Family Friendly Considerations
Miller is very thorough in her research about the lives of Mary Church, Anna Julia Cooper, and Ida Gibbs Hunt. Many of the scenes in the book are based on true events with only minor fabrications to turn them into a novel. What is not as rigorously historically accurate, however, are some of the modern political views that are incorporated into the book. There is a comment about recent American election results, as well as several inaccurate statements about America’s founding. These scenes sometimes read more like passive aggressive attacks on certain contemporary groups instead of a strict recounting of historical facts.
While this emotional novel had potential to tell a powerful American story, it was deeply infused with modern political agendas that compromised its message of unity and equality.
