‘The Fault Between Us’ Book Review
The Fault Between Us is a thoughtful historical novel written by Stephanie Landsem about a trio of sisters trying to find hope and reconciliation after a dramatic falling out.
Main Themes
Claire loves her husband, Red, and she loves their simple life out west, away from the city. But her family hates that she married someone they don’t approve of and are desperate to bring her back home. Her two sisters, Bridget and Fannie, are sent to fetch her, but things start to go wrong from the start. Fannie starts to see the appeal of living away from their controlling father, which sends Bridget into a panic. She is terrified that her family is falling apart, but her loyalty is torn between her sisters and her father. But when a natural disaster strikes, each sister discovers something new about themselves and realizes that maybe family is allowed to look a little different.
Loyalty to family is certainly a major theme, and along with that is an emphasis on forgiveness and letting people be free to live their own life without being tightly controlled or manipulated. The characters have to learn how to show each other grace without judgement and be willing to be reconciled after a falling out.
Faith Element
The characters learn to trust that God has a plan for their lives, even when the road isn’t easy. Family values of unconditional love, honesty, transparency, loyalty, and hard work are celebrated.
Family Friendly Considerations
This is a fantastic novel for adults and older teens, although younger audiences might not be mature enough to discern the nuances of the themes of family dysfunction. While the book is absolutely worth the read, it is a little intense for more sensitive readers.
