‘Still Waters’ Book Review
In Still Waters, main character Beth Peachy wrestles to figure out the truth behind the family secrets that are keeping her from being baptized into the Amish church.
Main Themes
In this masterfully written coming-of-age story, Beth is torn between the freedom to choose her own life in the English world and the stability and friends she has in the Amish world. She has to make a decision soon, but feels pulled in both directions. Loyalty to family is a big part of her life, as it is with most Amish novels, but she’s not sure if her family is worth being loyal to. There’s plenty of mystery surrounding Beth’s ailing grandmother, the one woman who might hold the answers Beth is desperately looking for.
There is plenty of action with the side characters as well. The love interest, Danny, has his own issues with a rogue brother, and Tabitha, a favorite from the first book in the series, is back and trying to rediscover her place in the community.
Faith Elements
God stays close throughout the novel, as characters pray and read the Bible and try to discern his will for their lives. There are themes of God’s forgiveness and grace for mistakes.
Family Friendly Considerations
This is a very family friendly novel, especially for teens and young adults. The characters wrestle with finding out who they are apart from their parents, and there’s a satisfying ending as the characters finally discover what is truly important to them and worth dedicating their lives to.
