South of Somewhere | Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life

South of Somewhere is a deep, thought-provoking novel by T.I. Lowe that discusses sensitive topics such as addiction, recovery, and dysfunctional families. It is a masterfully written story about a recovering alcoholic and the challenges she faces as she tries to heal and get her life back together.

Main Themes

Junie is fresh out of rehab and determined to pick up the shattered pieces of her life while not picking up a bottle ever again. But life isn’t all sunshine and roses, even in the middle of a sweltering North Carolina summer. Unhealthy friends try to sabotage her, and her brother is unrelenting in his criticism and disdain for her. Junie is desperate to show the world that she can heal, change, and be a good mother, but the odds aren’t exactly in her favor. She struggles to find a job, make friends, and convince her brother to relinquish custody of Junie’s three-year-old daughter.

One of the most powerful themes in South of Somewhere is how Junie is seen as an awful person by society, even though she is trying harder than any other character to make something meaningful out of her second chance at life. She is confronting the demons of her past and finding healthier coping strategies. She is asking for forgiveness and actively trying to make amends. She is going to support groups and counseling. She is invested in growing her own business to support herself. But for some people, her efforts will never be enough to erase what she has done.

Even though her brother has a stable career, a family, and never got into bad habits, he is far more cruel and mean. He has no interest in becoming a better person and takes every opportunity to belittle and ridicule Junie’s efforts towards healing. South of Somewhere did a wonderful job of showing the reader that sometimes the people who live perfect lives on the outside are the most broken and despicable, while sometimes those whose lives are broken on the outside are trying the hardest to heal on the inside.

It’s impossible to walk away from South of Somewhere without having more compassion for those in recovery and realizing that showing unconditional kindness towards strangers can have a tremendous impact in their lives.

Faith Elements

Junie isn’t sure that God will still want her if no one else is willing to forgive her, but after meeting several women of strong faith in AA meetings, she’s willing to give church another chance. She realizes that God is willing to forgive and heal her and that she can have hope that life will get easier.

Family Friendly Considerations

Due to the nature of the themes discussed in this novel, it might be a little too intense for younger readers. It’s a great novel for adults who are able to think more discerningly about these topics and how culture responds to hurting people. All other aspects of the novel, including some minor romance and action sequences, are clean.
