Sense and Suitability Book Review
A delightful Sense and Sensibility parody, Sense and Suitability has become my new favorite regency romance. Pepper Basham wrote a witty and touching novel about loyalty, love, and second chances. One of my favorite characters was “Aunt Bean,” who was absolutely hilarious with her outlandish notions about men and dating. Every chapter of her marriage advice made me laugh.
Main Themes
Simon Reeves is faced with a desperate choice: marry for love or marry for financial security. Two years ago, he unexpectedly inherited an estate in ruin and has been scrambling to repay debts ever since. A large dowry might be the only way to avoid bankruptcy and public shame. And peer pressure is a dreadful thing in aristocratic circles.
Emmeline Lockheart, after a disastrous debut social season two years ago, is struggling to find a husband among the local aristocracy. Plenty of men are interested in her, but she finds them all boring and knows they wouldn’t approve of her scandalous undercover career as a novelist. There is only one man who can match her spunk and earn her affection…but her dowry is not nearly large enough to cover his inherited debts. And it was his cowardice two years ago that broke her heart and ruined her current prospects.
Now, Emme wonders if her treasured freedom from matrimony is worth ever giving up. And Simon has to choose between love and money. The themes of what is most important in life are delivered in humorous and memorable ways.
Faith Elements
There are no overt faith elements, although one character is a priest who encourages the others to attend church and consider the will of God in their decisions. Marriage is seen as sacred and not something to be taken lightly. The characters refuse to give up on their unique gifts simply because society tells them otherwise.
Family Friendly Considerations
Basham wrote a beautifully clean novel suitable for any adult or teen looking for their next favorite regency romance. This book is certainly family friendly, with comical romance scenes appropriate for all ages.
