Dean Allan Johnson lives with his family of five in Huntsville, Alabama. As a graduate of Mississippi State and Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, he has served in various roles of ministry and business. As a writer, speaker, and photographer, he enjoys sharing his life experiences walking with God to help others make the most of their time on Earth.

In this interview, Dean talks with us about his new book, Miracle Boat.

FF: What inspired you to write a book that grapples with the difficult reality of suicide?
I’ve experienced loss due to suicide and wanted to write a book that spoke to both the people who were left behind and those that struggle with intrusive thoughts.

FF: Why the boat theme?
Once again, it’s based on my lived experiences, and all the experts say to write what you know, and I know boats. Plus, there are a few examples of Jesus on the water with his disciples.

FF: Will people who aren’t interested in boats be able to follow along?
Absolutely. While the boat is a plot mechanism, it absolutely does not require prior boating knowledge. Readers of all backgrounds have enjoyed and learned from this book.

FF: What do you ultimately want your readers to take from Miracle Boat?
That each and every one of us is created in the image of God and each and every life matters–no matter how desperate we feel.
