I love history, and I wanted to explore the love between siblings and how far a sister might go to protect her brother and sister. Lucy was so desperate to keep them safe that she agreed to marry a man she’d never met.
Q: ALTHOUGH YOUR BOOK IS FICTION – WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF SOME ELEMENTS IN THE BOOK THAT CAME FROM REAL LIFE?
I’m the eldest of 4 kids, and I still mother my brothers mercilessly. Since I’m the eldest, I’ve always been the caretaker. Like Lucy, I feel taking care of everyone is my responsibility. While I was writing Blue Moon Promise, I had to battle with my need to help and control things, just like Lucy. My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer and my dear friend Diann Hunt’s ovarian cancer came back all in the same week. Though I desperately wanted to fix both problems, I had to take my hands off and turn those I love over to God. Control is just an illusion. But the great news is that God has us in his hands!
Q: WHEN MAKING UP STORIES, HOW MUCH DO YOU DRAW ON YOUR OWN LIFE EXPERIENCES AND PEOPLE YOU KNOW, VERSUS DRAWING ON RESEARCH ABOUT COMPLETE STRANGERS?
I like to bring in real life experiences. When my children got into diving, I had to write a story that had divers. When my son got a Harley, I had a hero who rode a Harley in one of my novels.
Q: FACT VS. FICTION – WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT SOME EXAMPLES IN YOUR NOVEL WHERE YOU TOOK SOME LIBERTIES WITH THE FACTS?
I try not to take liberties with the facts.
Q: WHAT DO YOU WANT READERS TO TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR BOOK?
I hope readers close the book with a fresh sense of God’s guiding hand in our lives. Nothing comes our way until it passes through him first. While trials will come, we can rest assured that he is going to work it out for our good.
