Monzon - Hearts in Circulation book review - 750

‘Hearts in Circulation’ Book Review

A comical forced-proximity romance novel from Sarah Monzon. Haley was sure that nothing good would come of the old bookmobile the library was given, so she’s taken by surprise when it leads her through her own romance story.

Main Themes

Romance is front and center in this contemporary novel. Most of the attraction relies on “chemistry,” with plenty of “they’re-the-only-person-in-the-world-I-don’t-hate” tropes. I thought Monzon presented Levi’s sensory overwhelming struggles well. The addition of the bookmobile provided an interested catalyst for the story and allowed Haley’s love for books and people to shine.

Monzon breaks the fourth wall frequently in her novel to address various tropes her characters are either conforming to or trying to avoid. I think it works well in some scenes to avoid too many clichés, but it felt forced in other scenes rather than humorous and light-hearted.

Faith Elements

There are no Christian elements or mentions of God in this novel. Haley jokingly curses people with mild inconveniences several times…which should not be a joking matter for Christians.

Family Friendly Considerations

The characters put themselves in compromising positions several times, and while nothing further than highly intimately hugs and kisses is written, I cannot give Hearts in Circulation our family friend seal of approval for clean romance. This is not an appropriate book for younger audiences.
