In this interview, Jubilee talks with us about her My Brother, the King Trilogy.

FF: What inspired the story in your book?
My passion for writing began with a childhood love of the Bible and expanded into a lifelong obsession with the authentic lives behind the scriptural stories that form the foundations of my Christian faith. I had been studying David and Jonathan in Scripture for years, putting together a Bible study that answered my deepest questions about the story’s relevance for us as believers, and that served as the catalyst for the novel series. It was a powerful mixture of divine activation and timing, and years spent listening to the characters’ voices. This is a beautiful story of two gifted men embracing the will of God through a selfless covenant that would withstand the brutal tests of jealousy and war…and change history.

FF: What can you tell us about the main characters in your book?
The heroes of the most famous masculine friendship in history, David and Jonathan are the two main voices in my novel series. Jonathan is the first prince of Israel, in line to inherit a throne that has already been stripped from his family because of his father’s disobedience. David is the shepherd boy destined to replace him as king. Facing a very difficult path, the two warriors forsake rivalry and pledge themselves to a friendship forged in the pursuit of the God who called them both.

FF: Which character surprised you the most?
My novels go back and forth between David’s and Jonathan’s perspectives, so I was most surprised by how my own struggles and questions kept coming out in their voices in different ways. Their personalities are very different, but both characters’ journeys represent very real challenges in our walks of faith and the faithfulness of God through it all.
To be honest, however, the most surprising character shows up in book three of the series, My Father, the King…also on Amazon! In this book, David and Jonathan’s legacy touches the next generation.

FF: Why do you think storytelling is such a powerful way to share truth?
My go-to genre is biblical fiction, which starts with understanding and unpacking the power of the greatest stories ever told. My goal is to breathe fresh life into these stories while fleshing out Scripture’s original intent. I want to invite readers into a new level of awareness of the Bible, connecting them to the epic beauty of what happens when God’s love and power intersects with humanity. This is my favorite way to share truth on a level that touches human experience.

FF: How has your faith or world view impacted the way you tell stories?
Over the years, my early love for the Bible blossomed into a deep yearning to understand what actually got biblical men and women through the heart-wrenching circumstances they dealt with. My life experiences have been impacted by the faithfulness of the same God who wrote His way through the Bible and invited me into His Story. By sharing our connection to Scriptural breakthroughs, I want to help readers understand that they too are invited in. God is writing us all into history and we are living out the epic stories of the future.

Carrying a secret anointing that won’t stay hidden, David yearns to fight alongside his childhood hero rather than against him, but his calling threatens both their lives at every turn.

Instead of fighting to the death over a crown that can’t belong to both of them, the two young warriors forsake rivalry and pledge themselves to a friendship forged in the passionate pursuit of the God who called them-both.
