Beyond Sudden Death | Suspense

by FamilyFiction

Beyond Sudden Death is a thought-provoking novel by Peter Pappas that seeks to answer the question, “Where will I go when I die?” Following the story of Ella, who was clinically death for eight minutes after a sudden cardiac arrest, the book explores several major world religions and the evidence for their credibility.

Main Themes

Ella has a near-death experience that sent her on a quest to figure out the truth about the afterlife and God. As she explores Christianity, the beliefs of Jehovah Witnesses, and the beliefs of Mormons, she is discouraged to find that there are many false prophets, unreliable religious manuscripts, and religious beliefs that don’t sit right with her. As her health worsens, she begins to despair of ever discovering the truth. Her life is further thrown into turmoil when a mysterious stalker repeatedly threatens her.

Peter Pappas did an admirable job of studying and presenting the truth about traditional Jehovah Witness and Mormon beliefs. While Ella initially finds their sense of conviction and community appealing, she discovers that the doctrines they are based in don’t hold to up rigorous academic standards and their prophets are seriously flawed. Olivia, her best friend, is with her every step of the way to make sure she always comes back to the truth.

There are main themes of searching for truth and finding safety and salvation in Jesus.

Faith Elements

This is a thoroughly Christian novel, with a major focus on finding the truth about heaven and hell. Multiple other religions are scrutinized and proven wrong.

Family Friendly Considerations

There is a fair amount of suspense, between Ella’s failing health and the tension with her persistent stalker. It is a clean novel suitable for teens and adults.
